The Youth Nuclear Peace Summit
was held
October 9-11,2019
at the
Canadian Museum for Human Rights
Winnipeg, Canada
It was a Resounding Success.
In the fall of 2019, 90 high school students (from 20 schools) gathered in Winnipeg at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to attend a three-day Youth Nuclear Peace Summit. They discussed the human, environmental, economic, political, and legal costs of the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The overall outcome of the Summit was for students to ratify their own Youth Nuclear Peace Treaty for presentation to the Non-proliferation Treaty Review Committee, meeting in Washington in 2020.
With endorsement from ICAN (International Campaign To Abolish Nuclear Weapons, 2017 Nobel Peace Prize winners) and Robson Hall, Faculty of Law University of Manitoba, the following partners collaborated to present the Summit:
Rotary District 5550, World Peace Partners
Manitoba Education and Training
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, California
Soka Gakkai International Association of Canada
Participants were invited from schools in Canada, the United States of America and from Japan. Each participating school was invited to send four students and one supervising teacher. This Summit was student-led, and included a focus on Indigenous perspectives. It also provided opportunities for students to explore peaceful solutions to conflict resolution. It inspired them to become leaders on the impact of nuclear weapons on society, and empowered them as they established a global network of informed citizens.
