In the fall of 2019, high school students will gather in Winnipeg at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights to attend a three-day Youth Nuclear Peace Summit. They will discuss the human, environmental, economic, political, and legal costs of the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The overall outcome of the Summit is for students to ratify their own Youth Nuclear Peace Treaty for presentation to the Non-proliferation Treaty Review Committee, meeting in Washington in 2020.
With endorsement from ICAN (International Campaign To Abolish Nuclear Weapons, 2017 Nobel Peace Prize winners) and Robson Hall, Faculty of Law University of Manitoba, the following partners are collaborating to present the Summit:
Rotary District 5550, World Peace Partners
Manitoba Education and Training
Nuclear Age Peace Foundation, California
Soka Gakkai International Association of Canada
Participants have been invited from schools in Canada, the United States of America and from Japan. Each participating school is invited to send four students and one supervising teacher. This Summit will be student-led, and will include a focus on Indigenous perspectives. It will also provide opportunities for students to explore peaceful solutions to conflict resolution. It will inspire them to become leaders on the impact of nuclear weapons on society, and empower them as they establish a global network of informed citizens.
